Jack, Just a little side info. On April 12th 1984 I had a Hopewell Police Officer drop me off at the site. I had a heavy coat, cassette tape recorder, and a brown metal folding chair. It was 10:30 at night. I took my chair, walked to the site (I thought was the site) and sat down. I wanted to know what the place was like at night. Sites, sounds, smells. What animals would come around. Do that kind of research. Showing up with sunny blue sky, nice spring winds, don't get it. Live the case is what I always say! I was there three hours and the cop came back and took me back to my motel in Pinnington where I was staying. The times have changed. Try getting a cop to do that for you these days!

Hey Good Buddy Jack, Short and quick! I went several times to the site where the body was found, I thought! In 1986 I want to the site with three old troopers who where at the site when the body was found. At that time the State of New Jersey was planing on putting a historic marker at the site. All I will say is that where most researchers go, ain't it.

Geld. The German Conilate? Really? Here's something for you to consider and research. Food for though as they say. Why would Condon's son in law, Ralph, have several of the gold ramsom notes? Where would he get them in the 1930's and 40's? In the 1980's I went to stamp and coin shows all over the country. I was able to find three bills from the random payment that went down at St. Raymond's. I sill have two of them! How would Ralph have gotten his? One of the things that make you go ..."Hmm!"

I was with Tony Scaduto at the U. of Delaware in the in the 1980's when he debated Jim Fisher. I was a friend with both men, but Jim beat him bad in their only debate. I have a VHS of it. Maybe I'll convert to DVD and make it available to whoevere would like a copy.
Tony got his a-- kicked. How Jim would do against Micheal, well that's another story.
Hi to may good buddy Jack! Still on the trail of the flag!!

Micheal,
I have made arrangements to get the pictures shot in Hopewell in the days following the kidnapping and before the body was found. Do you or anyone else on this site know if a car in 1932 with a New York tag would have the same tag in 1934? I don't know how DMV New York worked then.

Mike,
There's. A huge difference between what you do with the case and what I did with the case. You research it, and I tried to live in it. Short example. You know the company who made the nails used on Hauptmanns house in the Bronx. I was able to convince Hunterdon County to let me sleep overnight in Hauptmanns jail cell in Flemington. See the difference.
You used documents. (Nothing wrong with that!) about the people in the case. I knew the people, and there were many still above ground then.
Yep we see it differentl. You read about it and I lived it as much as I could. This may sound funny, the case back then had it's own smell and taste. You can't get that from documents, though I read many. Nothing wrong with documents. When I looked at the case I was only, when I stared, 45 years removed.
I know you have been looking at the jury of which I have a very good understanding. I think I know were you are going so I won't jump the book. I had a chance to become good friends with Ethel Stockton. I was living in Florida when I started looking at the case and she liived in Ocala which was a short drive. We talked about the case for hours. I would often take her to lunch. One day we decided to drive to Lake Weir, Florida, and we ended up gettig a private tour of the house where Ma Barker and her son Fred were shot and killed by the FBI. That was a neat day.
I also had several hours of phone conversations with Robert Cravatt. Everyone thought Ethel was the last juror alive, but everyone missed Cravatt!.
I had a blast, doing what I call living the case.
Have you seen Hauptmanns shoes at the Research Center? The day I saw them Col Pagano was with me. I said "They look like they would fit me." Pagano said "try them on." I did. Very stiff, very dry from years of storage, but they fit. I bet that will never happen to anyone again.
Keep going this case is a real trip!

Two comments to consider:
1) Fisher to Bornmann : "Lew I know he's guilty, but I have to do everything I can for my client ."
2) Hauptmann to Bornmann: "If I confess can you guarantee that I won't burn?" Bornmann to Hauptmann: "I can't do that." Hauptmann to Bornmann: "Then I have nothing to say."
I think I know your take, but give it to me anyway.

I knew Hans Kloppenburg . (Got Christmas cards from him every year for the last 10 years of his life.)He never had any doubt about Hauptmann.
He told me when I visited him at his home in 1985: "Richard was innocent, innocent till I die." He always thought in Geman and sometimes his English reflect that.
What arer you implying ?
Here's a FLASH! I talked on the phone in 1983 to Betty Gow. She was living in Scottland. "Davy, she called me Davy, Hauptmann and Hauptmann alone kidnapped the baby. I even heard, she said, that Olly said before he died that I was involved. He was a fool. I had nothing to do with that child's death!"
I know there are many who think that Betty was involved, and thats ok, but the "deathbed" comment was known by me and I'm sure others for over 20 years before your book. I never thought it was a big deal. You did and I guess it's a good marketing tool to those who don't know. To me it's still a so what! ,

Being a part of an organization that doesn't play well with others, and can't keep their comments to themselves, I have to spread some love here, today. Big "Sweets" theory was a wash. Mike needs to make a call and rip someone a new one. Now I'm being very kind here so I'll leave at that.
Bottom line though is timing. Someone here completely missed the boat. The breakout date for the book should have been set for two weeks from now. But when Mike says, "It's not about the money," your going to have problems, and you should always have someone with you who feels it's all about the money. Don't get me wrong here I think a labor of love is great and the meek will get the earth, but never get pushed around! Never!

Blue -"B" - Bruno
Holes - "H" - Hauptman
Put them all together they spell.........

Jack,
I really like what you have to say in your last post. BUT, you used two very dangerious words - "simple and ingenious." Be very careful how you use those words!
Then to close with "nothing more!" Jack my friend there is a target on the back of your head now!

Help me here Jack.
In your minds eye see a stack of paper sitting on Hauptmanns work bench in the garage. See a hammer. See a nail.
Forget 24 degrees / 27 minutes west. Geez!
It is almost so over thought that is impossible to see what's sitting right in front you. A finishing nail, roofer, 16 penny. A NAIL!!!
Talk about over think!

I understand about one-third of what your saying. "Jump Street" help me here.
One thing I totally "dig" is having a concept or mind-set and under no circumstances letting that go. I have had to do that for more years than I like to remember with my club.
I would have to struggle for years in a whole new direction to make this case as complicated as you have. I understand all the fringe interests, the night of March 1st though is there, simple. Everything else is just "Jump Street window dressing." But I will admit fun to look at . That's me. I talked to a lot of people who worked the case and they saw no humor in all the side investigations. I rememberI one calling them "distractions and nothing but a pain in the ass !"

The target concept wasn't my idea. A group of old Troopers gave me the information. I didn't come with the idea. Again I must say its a vey simple concept and I know it will cause problems! Too simple!

Just wondering. How many would be interested in a kind of class reunion in Hopewell or Flemington say next summer? Any thoughts, comments, suggestions or songs?

To me, and I know this is dangerious to say, the signature was a very simple thing. The cap off an ink bottle for the rings, the red dot a cork that was common to any kitchen in the 1920's and 30's. Set them up the way they are on the notes and you have an excellent copy, small version, of a German machine gunners practice target. The holes are placed the way you would want your shots to appear on he target for a good score. What did do Hauptmann do in WW 1 ?
Hang on Jack and wait for the storm. This will really be a hornet up somebody's nose. Just wait, I can hear the keys being punched even at this moment.
Any beefs take it up with Hugo, Lew. Bill and Jack. NJSP all!

There were many who found him a disappointment. (NJSP) I also found several folks who lived in Hopewell in the 1930's who were still there in the 1980's who didn't have a lot of nice things to say about him. I was introduced to one guy who took me to an area just off the road that runs in front of the Lindbergh house where Ben use to hang out. He (Ben) shouldn't be on the " Saints " list for this case.
But, somehow I think you already knew that about Ben.
