I think most on this board will agree that Isador Fisch was a very odd individual. In fact his anti-social behavior combined with his persistent cough makes me wonder why he always seemed to be around at the Hauptmann's events. The guy did not fit in. In fact, according to Anna H and friends, (in Scatudo?) Fisch always seemed to be sitting off to the side and not really joining in with any of the merrymaking. Okay, here's something a bit far-fetched, but please chew on it for a while and tell me what you think.
1. Could Isador Fisch have been a plant? I have heard/read from more than one source that Hauptmann met Fisch much sooner than we have been told. If this is so, could he have been part of some elaborate, long-reaching plan to pin the "kidnapping" on a totally innocent man...Bruno Richard Hauptmann?
2. Did Fisch really return to Germany and die from T.B.? Yes, there are many who actually recorded that he had a cough, and that he looked sickly to the point of dying, but all his troubles are nothing that a handsomely paid doctor and a long vacation in South America couldn't cure...if you get my drift. (BTW, my own mother had a very pronounced cough for 20 years) Wayne Jones was highly suspicious of Fisch... and didn't Kennedy (or Scatudo?) point out Fisch's shock and anger when Anna's friends simply wanted to give him a surprise farewell as the boat was about to disembark. What was THAT all about?
3. Lastly, is the grave site that was donated to the pitiful, penniless Fisch really his burial place, or is this just another one of those red herrings?

Hello Melinda--methinks there are yet a whole lot of interesting things left to discover about Izzy Fisch. 1. Sue75 found a book which suggested that BRH and Izzy knew each other well before the kidnap. They were fur trappers or smugglers in NJ? It was just too convenient that they met the summer "just after" the missing CALjr? See; www2.xlibris.com/bookstore/bookdisplay.asp?bookid=33081 "The second section of Bates’ book presents stories of Americana. “No Schtick Nose in Dat ‘Ting” is the tragic story of the Lindbergh baby kidnapping and murder trial, which haunted the family...." 2. I dont know about "plant" per se, but we do know that Fisch stayed well below the radar passing Gold Certs until he sailed for Liepsig in Dec 1933. And...he did not get arrested and executed. In many ways he left BRH holding the Certs? 3. Some persons think Fisch did not die of TB in Leipsig? Some, like JFC, think he was murdered: quote author=rick3 board=general thread=1189774298 post=1189774298]Interesting Frontpage Headline News: The Newark Advocate 9-22-1934 - Dr. Condon Believes There were Three Men Involved in the Extortion Plot; Wants Fisch's Body Exhumed for Study! "I believe he was murdered"--JFC
- "Fisch, the other man (eg Henry Uhlig)and a woman went to Germany but only the other man and the woman came back? "Fisch died in Leipsig after being there only a short time?"--JFC [List/]
4. There was also another mystery woman in Fisch's life when he lived in a boarding house in Norwalk, Connecticut after the kidnap around April 3, 1932? And how did Fisch end up owning property in Freeport LI if he was in fact "penniless"?

RE:
1. I play devil's advocate a lot but on this one I don't think it would be productive for me to do so. And so these are my opinions:
I believe they had known each other before the summer of '32. One of the consistent things about Fisch is that he was a secretive fellow who tried to keep certain people he was close to apart from one another. He was good at pretending to be dirt poor and was one of the best hustlers around.
I don't consider Hauptmann an "innocent" man by anyone's definition. He had a degree of involvement regardless of which evidence one might accept in my opinion. The idea that Fisch was a "plant" just doesn't jibe with the circumstances. If, for example, this were true - then why didn't something implicate Hauptmann before or immediately after Fisch's death? Why does it take another year for Hauptmann to be caught and how does Fisch's involvement ensure it does at that time?
If the "Fisch Story" is true - why then wouldn't Fisch tell Hauptmann what was in the box with specific instruction to spend the money?
Honestly, I think it more believable that Fisch had involvement and that he may have been meant to be the fall guy. If this were true then the Jewish Ritual Murder angle would have been served by the fact he was Jewish.
2. I am sure he did. By all accounts he was sick. Uhlig was with him in Germany and all the evidence points to him legitimately having TB. The NJSP Archives has a file with his medical records.....even his chest x-rays. Letters from the German Government confirmed his cause of death. Too much has to have happened for this to have been faked over this much time and two different countries. Too many witnessed his sickness.
3. See above. Fisch wasn't a Secret Agent - he was a swindler.
Now his role in this affair may have been to launder ransom money. He may have done this in various ways before his death.
Anyway...just my two cents.

Hi there Rick and Michael,
I just sent off PART I of a rather lengthy reply to your posts and it's not showing up! (Oh dear, I probably should have written this post in WORD, then copied and pasted, right?) Anyway, thanks for responding. I'm afraid I will now have to wait for a while before I can find time to re-write it. Sigh.

Melinda,
I sometimes "preview" and after reading through my post forget it was a preview instead thinking it was actually posted only to be surprised the post never showed up. I think this happens to all of us from time to time. I usually save my lengthy posts in a word document in case of this, a "time out", or some other situation which may cause me to lose my information.
Looking forward to your response and anyone else's thoughts and/or ideas....
