On the evening of March 1 Betty and Anne get Charlie ready for bed. Charlie is given a physic (mild laxative). He spits some of it up onto his Dr. Denton sleeping suit. They have to undress Charlie. During this time Betty sews the blue threaded undergarment for Charlie. He is then redressed for bed with the homemade garment and a clean Dr. Denton sleeping suit. Once Charlie is finally settled into bed Betty washes the stained sleeping suit in the bathroom. She takes it downstairs and hangs it in the basement to dry.
On Saturday evening March 12 Dr. Condon meets for the first time with Cemetery John. At the close of the conversation, in order to prove that they are the real kidnappers of Charlie, CJ says he will send the baby's sleeping suit to Dr. Condon as proof. CJ says that Dr. Condon should expect it on Monday(March 14). If CJ really has Charlie's body that means he goes to the place where the body is being kept to remove the sleeping suit. Since Charlie is deceased and starting to decompose, he quickly removes the sleeping suit and probably the diapers and rubber pants come off with it. Charlie's body, minus the diapers, rubber pants and sleeping garment, is put back in the burlap bag and reburied in the place he is being kept. The kidnappers determine that the condition of the sleeping suit is such that they cannot use it as proof. Another sleeping suit must be secured in order to continue the ransom negotiations. Dr. Condon, who is expecting to receive a package on Monday, gets a phone call instead from CJ saying there will be a delay in sending the suit but he will receive it. My thinking is that someone at Highfields is in contact with the people who have Charlie. This person is made aware of the sleeping suit dilemma and quietly takes the sleeping suit from the basement (the one Betty laundered) and that is the one that is sent to Dr. Condon's residence, being delivered on March 16. Late that evening Lindbergh comes and examines the sleeping suit and he wonders why it has been laundered!
Another reason I think the sleeping suit received at Condon's home could possibly be the one from the Highfields basement is based on the report from E R Squibb and Sons who did the biological examination of the laundered sleeping suit. In section IV of that report it describes some yellowish brown stains found on the sleeper that, when tested, were negative for blood. These stains could have been caused by the mild laxative Charlie spit up onto his sleeping garment when dressed the first time for bed.
I have also considered the possiblity that CJ might not have had Charlie at all but was seeking to extort money. Securing that sleeping suit would have been necessary to convince Lindbergh that he was the kidnapper of Charlie. There still would need to be a contact person at Highfields in order to obtain the suit. It is possible that this contact person could have been connected to the underworld. They were certainly well represented at Highfields. Take your pick out of those who were present there. One of them could have removed that sleeping suit from the basement and not be noticed leaving with it.
I know this is all hypothetical but it is based on some of the known facts/events in this case. That sleeping suit, whether from the basement or not, convinced Lindbergh that the people Condon was dealing with must be the kidnappers.
