Remembering: Theo. Hamm Brewing Co. East side pride: A beer and bearBy Tom Webb Pioneer Press10/02/2009 KIDNAP AND CORRUPTION
The 1933 kidnapping of William Hamm Jr., president of the brewery and grandson of the founder, was arguably St. Paul's crime of the century.
Hamm lived on a hilltop mansion overlooking his brewery. As he was walking home for lunch, Hamm was forced into a passing car, blindfolded, driven to a hideout in Illinois, and held for $100,000 ransom.
The kidnappers were members of the Barker-Karpis gang, which had moved to St. Paul during the gangster era of the 1920s and 1930s. The Hamm kidnapping became national news, a year after the kidnapping of the Lindbergh baby.

Michael...there is a second connection between St. Paul Minn and the LKC. Abe Wagner , a Purple Gangbanger was shot gangland style in Minneapolis on the run from the LKC? Abe's brother was shot in Manhattan in 1931? I think when he was shot he was using the alias Loeb? His Mom fromNYC had to ID the body? - killed 28 july 1932...by Joseph Schafer and George Young
- aka Abie Loeb...buddy of Harry Fleisher--seen in Englewood NJ
- seen near Hopewell NJ right before the Crime? or Elizabeth NJ?
- see FBI p. 147 and 407

There's a couple of reports on him at the NJSP Archives.... Here a really cool article Yidfellas: The Kosher Nostra from Mob Corner written by Thom L. Jones: There was Harry Greenberg, whacked in Los Angeles in 1939 as he sat in his car outside his home; Harry Millman, put down in Detroit in 1937, riddled like a salt-cellar while enjoying a drink in a bar, and Al Silverman, who went bye-byes in 1939 in Connecticut, dangling on a barbed-wire fence in Somers, sliced like diced ham. Maybe we could add to the out- of -state list Abe Wagner, killed in St Paul's in 1932, by George Young and Joey Schaefar, who might have been associates of the troop, but it's a long shot. Still, you can't stretch four into hundreds no matter how bad you are at mathematics. Two hundred, two fifty tops within the New York area, four known across the country, where did all the rest take place? It's a mystery for sure.

Another mention in this Memo regarding Schwarzkopf's complaints about the FBI withholding information from the NJSP:

One of the enduring myths of the LKC is that the Purple Gang went belly up in Lake Erie soon after the Collingwood Manor massacre: [possibly because JE Hoover and the FBI did not acknowledge the Mafia/Purple Gangs existance] www.realdealmafia.com/purplegang.htmlBut this is NOT true! The gang persisted, running the wiseguys from inside the Jackson Prison in Michigan where Ray Bernstien etc used thier influence to enter and leave the Prison at will! In 1943 the gang killed Senator Warren G. Hooper of Michigan in an influence peddling scheme. Harry Fleischer, Mike Selik, Pete Mahoney and Sam Fleisher were convicted of the hit in 1945!
