I had a meeting today with two men in possession of material from one of Hauptmann's Defense Team. One of the gentleman found a box full of Fred Pope's documents in the basement of a home located on Mountain Ave. in Somerville, NJ.
I knew before this meeting that there isn't any of Pope's stuff at the NJSP Archives so I was excited to look over the material since Pope concentrated on the Ladder and Wood Evidence. Pope was from Somerville and in addition to being Co-Counsel for the Defense had also been a Somerset County Prosecutor and District Court Judge.
Ok - so there's no doubt in my mind this stuff is legit. My first goal was to see if they were willing to donate this material to the NJSP Archives. It was presented to me there was no interest. I tried again and again but to no avail. I was told these items were going to be sold (probably on ebay). I asked them if I could give our board first crack at possibly buying the items and/or giving us a "heads up" before it gets listed. BTW - I personally won't be bidding or making any offers to buy the material.
And so here is a "sneak preview" of some of the material (out of consideration for the Sellers I am posting poorer scans and/or partial sections of the documents:
This is a sketch of Pope. There's some obvious damage but to me is a really unique item. There's two signatures on it. One is "Hil__ Zaenglein." This may be Hilda Braunlich whose last name would later become Zaenglein-Shaffer. The date next to the name is "Jan 13/1935." As most of us know Ms. Braunlich was a Defense Handwriting Expert.

For more information contact me via email and I will put you in touch with the Sellers. If no one does buy them here I am sure they will be listed individually on Ebay at which time I will try to give the board another "heads-up" by directly posting a link to the item in question.
