Sue has posted this link to a new article on Hugo Stockburger. Stockburger investigated the case as a Trooper before Hauptmann's arrest, and guarded him while in jail at Flemington. He was bi-lingual and listened in and made the infamous "Stockburger Reports" which were submitted to AG Wilentz to assist him in the Prosecution. After Hauptmann's conviction and removal to the Penn in Trenton, Stockburger continued on investigating the case - a couple of times doing undercover work by attending the various German rallies at organizations sympathetic to Hauptmann. This is a rare occasion to see him give an interview: ebs.gmnews.com/news/2006/1005/Front_Page/001.htmlMany thanks Sue!!!

A TROOPER FOR LIFE Home News Tribune Online 10/8/06 By RICK MALWITZ STAFF WRITER Excerpts: Stockburger has a carbon copy of the two-page summary of the conversation between Condon and Hauptmann in his scrapbook. He quoted Hauptmann denying any involvement in the case: "If I know anything about (the kidnapping) I would tell for the sake of my wife and baby."
Segments of the conversation between Condon and Hauptmann are included in a book by Rutgers history professor Lloyd C. Gardner, "The Case That Never Dies" (Rutgers University Press).
Stockburger — disappointed that so many books about the kidnapping suggest Hauptmann was innocent — declined Gardner's request for an interview. Full Article: www.thnt.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061008/NEWS/610080491/1001
