Not long ago (actually I don't remember when), I mentioned that I had a report from Keyes revealing a possible "false bottom" in the trunk Hauptmann built for his car. I can't find the posts, but I wanted to follow up in case I hadn't. If I did please forgive me. So what I found was there isn't a "false bottom" but there is what I'd call a "secret compartment." Facing the trunk, at the bottom left side there is a small compartment built into the trunk that's only accessible from the outside. Clearly, the police found it and since there's nothing in the reports about it, I think its a fair guess that it was empty at the time. By the way, while I'm obviously not a carpenter, for anyone who thinks Hauptmann lacked skill, this trunk indicates to me that he definitely had some. Here are some pictures for anyone interested (four pictures - scroll down): imgur.com/a/15H0ksI

It's quite possible that during Prohibition he did some rum-running, one of the best business to make money during the Depression. The secret place in the trunk is a good hiding place. Ships with illegal liquor came down the Hudson River and the East River, which is near Hunter's Island. The smuggling was done at night, and a canoe would help bring the stuff from the ship which could not come that close to the land. Let's not say that Hauptmann went to Hunter's Island in late February to play soccer; the place would be closed down for the winter so no fields or equipment would be available. He went there with three men and used his car to drive them, and he also drove Isidor Fisch and his front "Fritz" to the subway station. He may also have taken alcohol home from his hunting trip, hidden in the car. The accounts with the stock market were a front to hide what he was really doing. He had no phone in his house. He would not want his wife to overhear any conversations he might have with his connections in the booze trade.

I'm on a roll so here are some photos from the mid-October James Davidson presentation. They gave us a tour of the jail and opened up the Prosecutor's Office that would have been Tony Hauck's at the time (descriptions at the bottom of each photo as you scroll down): imgur.com/a/UfUpoTH
