I feel so sorry for this baby. Not one staff member or family member ever calls Charley by his name. He did not even have a name for a couple of weeks. Some refer to him as "the child" or "it" or "the baby"...
Even Betty and Ann never call him by his name when speaking of him.
This shows detachment of everyone involved in his everyday life by the people who supposedly love him. Not calling him by name puts him into a category where people do not even think of him as an individual. I beleive that by not naming the baby, there must have been some fear of him dying. And if he died, Charles Sr. would have lost his namesake...even though it ended up that way anyway.

You could be on to something here.
Then again, might it have been common for people, perhaps the rich (or any other class for that matter) - to refer to their children in this way?
I don't know. Or if we can find a reference by his name....how many times qualifies as "normal?"
I will keep my eyes open for the references.

Michael, What do you mean by, "...if we can find a reference by his name....how many times qualifies as normal?" I am not sure what you want me to do, see if I can find his name and reference my sources??

I am just asking if we find actual references where he is called by his name....how many of those would be necessary? Like at what point does this position become neutralized if we find those references?

I don't know... I just noticed he was rarely referred to by his name...that's a psychological way of "not connecting" that's all....at least that's what they say these days. I call my kids by their names when I refer to them...all the time. It may have been the era, the richness, children I guess were more out of sight and kept quiet in those days. Tiimes have changed a lot for kids nowadays...I don't know if giving them so much freedom in this day and age has helped...maybe in some respect, but you are right about about it being a different era and class of people. Maybe I am looking into it too much. Even in court, the lawyers referred to him as"the child".

Well I like the observation. I just believe in a "test" or "control" to make sure we aren't mistaken in some way before putting it in our pocket. It's easier to lose the point now then after we build something based upon it.
And I am not saying its lost - just trying to be careful because I've learned if you take a wrong turn at Albuquerque you might wind up in some place you don't wanna be.
