Here is a gem of an article which appeared in the Alpha Omicron Pi Fraternity publication TO DRAGMA in January of 1935. Sue discovered these personal insights of a woman by the name of Elinor Wallace Shrader, who managed to get a seat in the courtroom through friends that were scheduled to attend. Obviously she had some connections, as her seat at the lunch table of David Wilentz and Betty Gow speaks to. The article appears on pages 13 and 14 of this flip book. anyflip.com/qzpj/gfaq/basic

Interesting article. Thanks to Sue. Didn't Betty Gow testify the same day that Elsie did? What about that testimony? Betty had a hard time and the stand and was said to have fainted following it. Richard Hauptmann smirked when he heard about the faint. Perhaps he knew it was faked?

Col. Lindbergh testified on Jan. 3 and Jan. 4. His identification of "John's" voice was given to the court on Jan. 4. Elsie Whateley also testified on Jan. 4. Betty Gow gave her testimony on Jan. 7 and her faint occurred on that day, whether feigned or not.

On the subject of fakery, I'm sure even Judge Trenchard wouldn't have been immune to a few private smirks when Richard Hauptmann hit the stand..

Elsie was also recalled on the 15th day of the trial, January 22, for her testimony as to how her and Betty Gow found the thumb guard on the driveway.
