I recently purchased this original press photo, from the The Philadelphia Inquirer, dated 9/21/34. The block print typing on the reverse reads: "Hauptmann Garage Attacked" "After the arrest of Bruno Richard Hauptmann in connection with the Lindbergh Kidnapping officials descended upon his little garage where $13,750 of the ransom money had previously been found, and proceeded to attack it in a most hearty manner. Here an officer is shown taking tar paper from the roof... Reason: It was believed that more of the ransom money was cached about somewhere....." True enough, an additional $840 in gold ransom notes, along with his Menz Liliput 4.25 mm pistol would later be found in the bored our 2 X 4, nailed between two vertical studs and turned towards the garage wall. I believe that is a rather disconsolate-looking Anna Hauptmann by the main doors, which were painted red. Was this colour in tribute to the colour of Baron von Richtofen's Fokker DR.1 tri-plane, as some amateur psychologists believe? Attachment DeletedI'm pretty sure I've seen the curly black-haired detective who is standing in what is probably the vegetable garden previously, or perhaps it was this photo seen at an earlier time. Does anyone happen to know the name of this detective?

Does anyone happen to know the name of this detective? I don't know for sure, but I believe it was the Police Carpenters who dismantled the garage. It could be one of them which would be either Creamer or Enkler. Just throwing it out there because I don't know what either or them looked like.

WHO IS THE WOMAN AT THE DOOR? As I said, I believe that is Anna Hauptmann by the doors. Physical attributes would seem to align, and she is clearly dressed for housekeeping duties, or those perhaps having to do with being available at the garage for detectives' questions. The white socks I think are another indication it's her. She's too young to be Mrs. Rauch, and it's not neighbour Louisa Schuesler, who who was a bit more on the willowy side.

I know that police carpenters Cramer and Enkler were very much involved in the attic wood removal with Detective Tobin and that they accompanied Bornmann here, but not sure how much involvement they had in the garage deconstruction. From various photos, there seem to have been a good number of different investigators not only removing the wood structure, but digging into the ground inside the garage, so perhaps a bit hard to say where specific duties were confined or expanded upon, depending on what had to be done and who was available.
