The "Hippies" actually went quite a few miles west of Woodstock to Mt. Bethel in Sullivan Co. NY. Not really a big deal though the published story could have been written by Wilentz. Where was the fatal car accident? Good day, Herman

My Father would love this comment. He HAD to drive my brother and I to Bethel when we were kids to show us where Woodstock really happened. (ugh)
Yes, its interesting to note, shouldn't be blown off, but since "everyone" had their own Hauptmann story, and this doesn't fit in with other evidence then I can see how it was dismissed. That's not to say the guy was lying - but he could have been as we see with Whited, Rossiter, and Hochmuth - but a lot of these "newspaper" picture identifications were just mistaken.

The big difference here is either Hauptmann was involved in an accident near Walden in Upstate New York where someone died, or he wasn't. That might not be too difficult to find out, perhaps by going to a 1932 newspaper from the Walden, New York area. Here's another article from the Catskills that I posted under a different thread a few years ago. history.catskill.net/1937/1937-08-06-0001.pdf Mrs. Hauptmann campaigned in the Catskills in 1937 to clear her husband's name.
