After Hauptmann's arrest, the Listers had stated that Hauptmann eventually paid his bill in full. He would therefore not have left his gun with them, never to retrieve it. One of the items found in Hauptmann's home on the day of his arrest was a shotgun, a Remington Model II, Serial Number 367745, found in two pieces, with the cleaning rods in a canvas case. Also found were three boxes of shotgun shells. The gun sold at auction was likely not Hauptmann's but may have belonged to the Lister family or Roland Baker, another man in the 1932 hunting party. The auction price would certainly have been higher if buyers believed they were buying a shotgun that once belonged to Hauptmann. The story could also have evolved and changed over the course of 80 years . Great find though, Sue, as always!

Well, thank you!
I don't know if the item sold in 2012. Could the Lister family still have other Hauptmann-related stuff? I wonder if there is a history of ownership -- a paper trail of who owned the rifle (and the photo) over the years?

Roland Baker was John Lister's father-in-law?
