In Kennedy's book, The Airman and the Carpenter, he includes excerpts from Gunter P. Haas's report (Appendix III) which indicates that Hauptmann was not the Author of the ransom notes.
I wanted to post a little insight I have obtained from my research over the year which I am not sure many people are aware of....
Post-Scaduto there was a flurry of handwriting analysis done comparing the ransom notes to Hauptmann's handwriting. Most of these reports, either formal or informal, have never received any publicity.
For example, I stumbled upon some indication that QDE/Graphologist (I have found this combination more and more as I have searched) Margaret Wilson not only concluded that Hauptmann wrote the notes but there was some unique evidence of common authorship. Unfortunately I do not have a copy of the report, however, since this assertion occurred about the same time as Kennedy's book was released I wanted provide the information as a "control" to what is in the book. This link below is the only thing I have been able to find on the net about Ms. Wilson:
www.britishgraphology.org/magazine.htm
Next, I wanted to share a link to a Graphologist's recent comparison. It is contained on a neat web-page linked here:

I don't have the heart to tell this guy he is making a comparison with something that isn't written by the same hand as the ransom notes.... Feel free to enlighten this 'Expert' if you get the urge.
