Was Hauptmann a nudist on Cat Briar Island, located about a quarter mile offshore of Hunter's Island?
When the famous "beach pictures" surfaced and were published after Hauptmann's arrest in 1934, people could identify themselves in the pictures and came forward.
Max Stoeckl and John Braue were two men who appeared in those pictures.
Braue was an amateur photographer who took the beach pictures. Braue and Anita Lutzenberg lived together, but were they boyfriend/girlfriend? Braue took pictures of Hauptmann and Lutzenberg frolicking on the beach. I guess I dont understand these relationships of Hauptmann and his friends.
John De Ciancia was a Hunter's Island camper who said that Hauptmann was a known nudist on Cat Briar Island.
De Ciancia is quoted in the Circleville Herald as saying:
"That's why Hauptmann wanted to take his crowd over to Cat Briar Island... All his crowd went in for that sort of stuff, like they do in Germany. And Hauptmann would go in bathing winter or summer--he didn't seem to mind the cold at all."
The Circleville Herald Circleville, Ohio September 29, 1934
The same quotes appeared in the Times-Union from Albany, New York and the Syracuse American from Syracuse, New York on September 30, 1934.

Good job Sue! I doubt that anybody would have found that information without a really expensive search engine which I doubt many people have.

Great find, Sue. The more information that comes from independent sources like Cianca, if it is accurate, the better in determining the true nature of Hauptmann and this crowd. It's pretty clear that to ask any one of them what was going on or what they truly knew about him, they seem to have had their own version of Omerta.

While this is an interesting tidbit, I'm a little confused how this might relate to his "true nature"? This was a very different era and Europe has never had the same aversion to nudity that we have here?

Putting aside one's personal beliefs about the morality of nudity, did Hauptmann break the law if he appeared on Cat Briars Island without any clothes on?
Just asking.

I don’t know the answer about nudity on certain beaches but look at the movies that were made Pre Code till 1934, it was a different era.

Hi Stella,
In a sentence or two, could you tell me about the movies that were made pre-code till 1934?
German movies or American movies?
How was that era "different"?
Thank you in advance.

They were far more raucous and depicted a lot more debauchery than the post-code films. "As a result, some films in the late 1920s and early 1930s depicted or implied sexual innuendo, romantic and sexual relationships between white and black people, mild profanity, illegal drug use, promiscuity, prostitution, infidelity, abortion, intense violence, and homosexuality." We tend to view the era as a bit more prude, and in some respects it was, but often that lens is colored through cinematic depictions of such events. The Hays code codified a series of strict restrictions of what could be depicted and as such, very much whitewashed the 30s. The reality is nude beaches were quite prevalent in Europe in the 20s and common with Germans by the 1930s. It would not have been uncommon for European immigrants to take advantage of a semi-private stretch of sand for that purpose. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freikörperkultur(Note there is some nudity on that page)

Thank you, trojanusc, for your informative reply.
But, still, I wonder if the Hauptmann crowd knew that they could be arrested for indecent exposure because they were on a Bronx island (islet) and not in Germany.

Thanks, Trojan for the great reply. I bet law enforcement looked the other way at the nude beach scene as long as it was out of the way. They certainly did at Moonstone Beach in Rhode Island in the mid 70’s. Some of the actresses in the 30’s rose to fame in the pre code era, Mae West, Barbara Stanwyck, Hedy Lamar, Norma Shearer, Joan Blondell, Claudette Colbert, Marlene Dietrich, Loretta Young, and of course Jean Harlow. If you look at the Buzby Berkeley musical extravaganza’s before 1934 the dancers are very scantily clad.

While this is an interesting tidbit, I'm a little confused how this might relate to his "true nature"? This was a very different era and Europe has never had the same aversion to nudity that we have here? For the record, if Hauptmann and any of his German friends wanted to practice nude bathing on any beach or island, I don't believe it means much relative to any desire on their part to flaunt the laws of the time or make them them more criminally culpable. And I agree they would have have probably been more inclined to this behaviour based on their heritage and background. But I do believe such a practice, if it did take place, would have made them more trusting of each other and thereby more secretive in what they had to say about each other.

I saw those Getty images, which consist of two Scanlon photos, one with him facing the camera but with is head turned somewhat, and one which is a side view. Although the caption with the photos claims he was a Hauptmann look-alike, I'm not sure I'd agree. However, if someone saw Scanlon on the day of the kidnapping around Hopewell and then saw Hauptmann's face all over the newspapers following Hauptmann's arrest two and a half years later, it would not be crazy to confuse the two.
Now how did Scanlon get interjected into the Lindbergh case during the Hauptmann pre-trial and trial periods? Did he come forward voluntarily to announce to the world that he was NOT Hauptmann and had no connection to the LKC? Or was he found and questioned by LE? Or was he involved as a defense witness or potential defense witness? If anyone knows the basics of the Scanlon story with respect to the LKC, please post.

The basics of the Scanlon story: Some people felt that Scanlon (his name has been given as John, Robert, or Frank), looked a lot like Hauptmann. I believe Scanlon admitted to being near the Lindbergh residence at the time of the kidnapping. He drove around Hopewell in a green automobile that was later painted blue. Scanlon was from Menlo Park, New Jersey. He was a former real estate dealer. Scanlon was to be a surprise witness, but for some reason or another Ed Reilly did not want to use him at the trial. lindberghkidnap.proboards.com/thread/1116/hauptmanns-doppelganger

Well, I guess I had totally forgotten about a thread concerning Scanlon that we had done here back in 2017, which was titled "Hauptmann's Doppelganger." In fact, I myself had posted on it back then.
If I understand this correctly, Scanlon came out of complete obscurity following Hauptmann's arrest and went to several newspapers, proclaiming his physical resemblance to Hauptmann and that he was present in a green auto near Highfields on March 1, 1932. The media obliged him by taking some photos. That seemed to be his "15 minutes of fame" and he did NOT participate in the Hauptmann trial.
