in the Nova show, it looked like the ladder's wood is very dark. was it at some time shellacked/varnished, or a product of fingerprint dusting or just age? or all the above?

This is a great question and I don't know how I missed it.... The ladder did become stained by the Silver Nitrate solution that Dr. Hudson showed the NJSP how to use in order to raise fingerprints the black powder did not. Speaking of the ladder (before I forget), here is a pretty cool picture of the Troopers searching near Highfields for the origin of the ladder that I stumbled on while doing an internet Picture Search:

that is a great photo Michael! I don't recall ever seeing it before.
that poor ladder has been through so much, taken apart etc. it's hard for those of us non-carpenters &/or who have not seen it in person to visualize or draw a conclusion about it. I have seen it referred to as ramshackle, crude, etc. even BRH said it was not worthy of his abilities thus he didn't make it. but on the other hand Kevkon has spoken how clever it is & could very well hold the weight of a bigger person than originally thought. and certainly from the standpoint of being able to extend yet fitting in a car, it is very ingenious.
I really, really, would love to see the footage excluded from Nova of the guy climbing the replica & getting in the window! I am surprised it was not included, you would think that particular re-enactment would be a ratings-getter. seems like it should be conclusive, either your average person could or could not climb a similar ladder, nip in & not disturb too much.

Just found out that I will be getting a copy of the climb from the director.

Kevin,
You know I'd like to see it. I've heard he put the bag in his teeth as a way to get out with it. That's pretty clever. Do you think, if Hauptmann did this alone, he did the same thing or might there have been another way to do it?

Hello Michael and everyone...Could an airplane have come in and out on the night of the kidnapping? Did the air landing strip/field next to the house give the kidnappers a way to carry the ladder in, as well as getting the baby out in a hurry? Please let me know your thoughts.

Not in my opinion.
