There certainly is alot of truth in what you say Elyssa/ with a very tiny footnote.....the invention of the Internet now gives us all the power to search out information and others with knowledge not available for 75 years. So, it we freely associate and assimilate any new evidence about Charlie, or CALs families, or Nazi sympathies, or epilepsy, or the Temple of Divine Power, or any one of dozens of topics we may see a whole new pattern emerge. However, if we just spend our efforts finding new ways to prove that BRH was the Lone Wolfe Kidnapper as charged, well, then thats a whorese of a totally different color? Actually, IMHO, I think new patterns and directions are emerging every week! Also, the more women we can attract to this subject the more likely we will form new patterns. There are a huge number of women directly involved in this case! And thier thoughts, feelings and motives are often hidden from the left-brain linear sex.

Joe...you have done lots of work on the holes. Just how accurate are they from one note to another vis-a-vis the 27-29mm distance between them? Do you consider them "perfectly" holed? Also, how many different punch types do you see or can id? I see a 3-leaf clover punch in notes after the Nursery note? Its usually positioned on the ends in Hand of Hauptmann/ pages 27-28, 33-34, and 48. 3 times?

Rick, I've have not measured the hole distances myself, although Mark Falzini has previously measured them for me on the original nursery note. I had requested measurements from centre to centre and also inside edge to inside edge.
I can only assume that through the table brace discovery, all of the notes show consistent hole spacing as they all line up together over the brace's holes, when the individual sheets are stacked together along their lower and right edges.
I don't know exactly what to make of the many shapes and sizes we see from note to note. I'd love to do a detailed study of the front and back impacts of each hole in each note. In my own work I have seen a lot of variation in the hole shape from basically round, to clover shaped, to squarish, to elliptical, all from the same punch, going through multiple sheets of paper. It's almost like you don't really know exactly what you're going to get. This seems to approximate the general tendencies of the ransom notes for shape and size and I found the inverted finishing nail punch to most accurately reproduce this effect.

I don't know if anyone's seen it, but I did a quickie demonstration on the previous page relating to how easily the hole spacing could have been reproduced with a very simple cardboard template. I don't believe Hauptmann involved anything more complicated than this principle.

Thanks Joe/ you know how I like to dream? I was thinking that the more and more precise the holes get the more and more precise the cardboard/wood template must get. To be quite honest I am still baffled by the forward thinking of the hole maker to even consider this strategy. Yikes? Planning for one year or more? Michael only hints that anyone else tried to horne in with a fake or phoney "singnature"? Its just too difficult. I really like the idea of folding the paper and makeing at least two notes at once. Mighty clever, maybe we could match up the pairs? Not just by the tears. i had the notes in my hands this month but didnt think of that? I still like the notion that this hole technigue was borrowed from spy school. Only recently I read that Gaston Means claimed to be a German spy in WWI? He would make a great accomplice! He did twice a$ good a$ CJ, yet never showed any notes/holes or symbols.

I hate anwering my own posts but I read something interesting in the NYT (15 May 32) today. The comment made was that someone, CAL/BRK or JFC said "the ransom was paid to CJ on the basis of the 3-holed singnature"! Now, thats pretty clever? I suppose we are then led to believe that asking for the Sleeping suite was a ruse or fake to decoy other extortion gangs like Gaston Means who did not know the secret handshake? If I recall correctly Means got his foot in the door with Dr.Denton knowledge and a floorplan of Highfields. That leaves Curtis--howd he get his foot in the door without anyding? Also, how much time was wasted waiting for the sleeping suite if it was all about the Symbol? Puzzling?

Rick, if this table is really of interest to you, that is if you seriously think that it is viable as a means to make the holes in the notes, then I have a few suggestions. First get a piece of wood about an 1 1/4" thick and drill (3) 3/16" holes in in the center about 1" apart. Now try and make a series of identical punched holes in 5 or 6 sheets of note paper. If after this exercise you still see the viability of the furniture piece, let me know and I will ship you an exact reproduction of the "Mersman brace". You can then attempt the same procedure with the part.
I doubt it will be necessary.
I guarantee that this is a better way to resolve this issue then posting descriptions and sketches.
Btw; There is another problem with the table part as a note hole template which is never mentioned. It has to do with the extra 2 holes. Think about it!
