Friends of Historic Flemington will present a Lindbergh Kidnapping Trial Presentation titled “When the Circus Came to Town” at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, in the Hunterdon Central Regional High School Little Theatre at 4 Junction Road in Raritan Township.
Local historian Jim Davidson will present an insightful and captivating take on events that hit the sleepy borough of Flemington like a tsunami during the six weeks in the winter of 1935 when the so-called Trial of the Century, the Lindbergh baby kidnapping trial, played out in the Historic County Courthouse, and on the porch of the endangered historic Union Hotel.
From the first weekend of the trial when 50,000 people descended upon Flemington and trashed the courthouse, to the comings and goings of some of the era’s most recognized movie stars, reporters and radio personalities on hand for the spectacle, to the escapades of “Nellie,” the stray dog that became famous when reporters covering the trial adopted her as a mascot, guests will be treated to a behind-the-scenes look at the stories behind the trial, as well as dramatic highlights of the trial itself.
Davidson taught history at Hunterdon Central Regional High School and has served as president of the East Amwell Historical Society, as a member of the township’s Preservation Committee, and as driving force behind the East Amwell museum. He also served 15 years on the Hunterdon County Cultural & Heritage Commission. A lifelong Hunterdon County resident, Davidson is an avid collector of Lindbergh memorabilia and is a noted author on the Lindbergh baby kidnapping trial, on Anne and Charles Lindbergh, and on the trial’s impact on Flemington.
Admission is $15 with proceeds benefiting the non-profit Friends of Historic Flemington. Tickets may be purchased online at Eventbrite.com or by contacting Joanne Braun at (908) 268-6638.
