Well, this story has Condon, a questionable character in everybody's revelations, and a woman he possibly made up, like the violin lady. There is no substance in anything that gets come up with here. I think one person on here would be ashamed to tell his recent ancestors what he's doing.

Michael, When Condon says this woman is what brought him into the case, was he ever asked why he originally said it was the kidnappers’ response to his Home News letter that brought him in?

Michael, When Condon says this woman is what brought him into the case, was he ever asked why he originally said it was the kidnappers’ response to his Home News letter that brought him in? No. It was through Governor Hoffman's efforts that we even know about this. He contacted O'Sullivan to verify the story and once confirmed added it to the long list of conflicting statements and testimony that he wanted to address by interviewing Condon. That interview never happened and we can certainly thank Wilentz who obstructed and blocked it. Just this alone baffles me as to why anyone who has ever studied this case would say Hoffman's re-investigation was worthless or meaningless. There is information there to learn from. There is history there that, for whatever reason, was either ignored or simply never looked at. Why? Perhaps because those who looked didn't have the time to be thorough? That's certainly understandable but why dissuade others who might want to by pawning off ignorance as fact? Hell, there's people who NEVER looked telling people what's there and what to believe and not to believe!

Hi, Michael! I am itching to get into Condon's timeline, but I don't want to start a discussion before your book comes out. I would like to ask one question, though. When, exactly, did the lady come to his house, crying and carrying on and needing his help? (The lady whose name Condon promised to take to his grave?) Hi Rebekah. Condon told O'Sullivan this story on May 14th. He claimed it was what brought him into the case, however, he did not give him the date it occurred. But "if" Condon was telling the truth about it causing his entry, that clue gives us a really good idea about when it would have occurred. I try to cover this with everything I've got in the upcoming volume. Hopefully how I wrote it "works" like I believe that it does. Everything ties together and seems quite obvious after reading what I've assembled. Thank you. I believe that this visit is very important in the timeline and the communications Condon made following this meeting may be a real insight into his involvement. I'd bet my next paycheck (if I still got one, ha) that it occurred before he wrote his letter to the Bronx Homes News. They were waiting for it, whoever "they" were, and the poor old buffoon bought right into it. Just my opinion. Can hardly wait for V2!

Hi Rebekah & Lightning,
As we all anxiously wait for V2, the next best thing on Condon's timeline inconsistencies is, in my opinion, Gov. Hoffman's 16-part Liberty series entitled "What Was Wrong with the Lindbergh Case?"
Parts 9 & 10 delve deep into Condon's actions and ends with the claim about the woman who Condon "...will carry her name a secret until I die."
Unfortunately the series is too big to attach here, but if anyone wants it, just PM me and I will email it to you.

One of the things I often say, and its important for me to stress again, is that on this venue we tend to zero in on a specific point, fact, or event. It gets debated then we move onto another point without still considering the previous one. These debates are absolutely good, necessary, and they reveal a lot. But one thing I've learned is that the "other" component is to take a step back to look at the bigger picture by examining everyone/everything at once. For example, we can debate Hauptmann's guilt "point by point" and cast doubt on each point. If looking at it this way, its obvious why there are certain people who believe he was completely innocent. But by stepping back it becomes impossible to conclude that. Because of this its is clear he's involved. Evaluating the entire matter in this way also proves there were others involved as I believe I've already demonstrated. So the Hauptmann "question" becomes his "part." Was he the "mastermind?" Obviously no. The same goes for Condon. If the same neutral and consistent approach is applied to him and his actions there can be no doubt.

However, I don't believe Hauptmann was in New Jersey that night. There are just too many common sense scenarios that lead me to that conclusion. The one thing that really brings me to the belief that he was involved is Condon's address and phone number on the inside closet molding. Can't get passed that; it looks like he wrote it, and he even said so himself.

This is a bit off topic but I wasn't sure where else to post it. Does anyone know the condition of the first ransom note envelope found on the windowsill? Was it crumpled or dirty at all from being in the 'kidnapper's' pocket? Was there ever any mention about this anywhere? Anyway, can't wait for Michael's book either!

Hi Wendy, Hopefully, others here can confirm this, but the nursery envelope was neither crumpled nor dirty. I'm basing this on the envelope's present day condition which is at the NJSP Museum (the letters and numbers were added by LE) --

I'm basing this on the envelope's present day condition which is at the NJSP Museum (the letters and numbers were added by LE) -- First of all it was a great question that Wendy asked. It was marked as Ex S-17 in Flemington. So right out of the gate, thanks to Wayne's post, we see the smearing occurred after it's discovery. I had only seen this in person once in my life, and it was so long ago I didn't want to go by memory so I got in touch with Mark Falzini. He said it was in " near perfect" condition when it was found, and doesn't have any fold or signs of being crumpled. It's his opinion it was probably kept in an inside coat pocket as opposed to a pants pocket.

Hi Michael, Don't know how else to get in touch. I can't log in as I get a Proboards message telling me I have been banned.... is this true and if so why? I post on only one other forum, not a Proboards one and am unaware of anything I have done or posted that has caused me to be banned, but there is no way to contact them. I know this is off topic but do you know how I can rectify this? Thank you, Daoud

You weren't specifically targeted and it had to do with the security feature casting a wide net. Your IP address got caught up by falling within the range of other problem addresses. Please let me know if you have any other issues and I should be able to fix them. Sorry for the inconvenience!

I think you're doing a great job. Tons of new and sometimes VG information. Lots of people say they're going to write one but few do. How about Harcourt Brace? They like new writers and you can stop by - great views of Lake Superior from their offices. They'll take you out for lunch at a Duluth restaurant. Remember to wear your white belt - hey, this ain't the Ritz.

Quick update on V2.
Winding down my final read which should be done tomorrow. As it stands now there are 1850 footnotes! Next, I will start from the beginning of those footnotes to make sure nothing got transposed and possible spelling errors in them. A big problem is that most of the Reports have misspellings in them so when cited I cannot correct it or the citation would not be legitimate. After that is the Intro and Acknowledgements then over to be Edited by a third party. I am hoping to hear that it didn't need much attention but we all know I can have an awkward style (so I'm probably not going to hear that). This will all happen before going to the publisher which will prevent any form of uncorrected proof to be mistakenly published.
So still a slight bit to go but there's light at the end of the tunnel.

You are truly in the home stretch now, Michael. Surely you must be setting a record with 1,850 footnotes!! I know you will have an amazing Volume 2. It sounds like you have everything well in hand this time. I hope you are finding the second time around the publishing corner to be a little easier with less stress. I expect to be just as anxious waiting for this volume to "hit the shelves" as I was with the first. But I know it will be worth every moment of the wait!

Brand new to this forum, but completely fascinated with this complex story. I read my first book on the subject more than 20 years ago. Just today finished your Dark Corners and loved it. Now I just need to know when the next volume will be published.
BTW, I have never believed Hauptmann guilty of the crime. I often wonder how different the case would've been handled today.

Welcome to our Board and I hope you decide to stick around. V2 is at the publisher and in its final stages. If I were to guess I'd say it will be out sometime next month. Its jam packed with new information on the topics it covers. There's some really important stuff that, like V1, calls the historical account into serious question. In fact it disproves the historical account in some very important places.

I'm eager to read it.
One thing I've always been puzzled about. Hauptmann's wife was poor; wasn't he offered a sum of money to 'tell the truth' before his execution? Presumably that would've helped his wife in the difficult years ahead, but he refused saying (paraphrasing) 'how can I admit to something I haven't done?'. Not sure I have my facts right, but if I do, it's a very sad ending to a life.
Is any of this covered in your next volume?

Presumably that would've helped his wife in the difficult years ahead, but he refused saying (paraphrasing) 'how can I admit to something I haven't done?'. Not sure I have my facts right, but if I do, it's a very sad ending to a life. Is any of this covered in your next volume? There were several offers made for a confession. The first was a Life Sentence floated before the trial to Fawcett. After his conviction there was another made to Fisher that if he made a full confession about everything and named his confederates they'd go to Trenchard to ask for commutation to life. Later there were at least two significant monetary offers made by newspapers for his confession. While I don't go into this specific topic in V2, I do go into some of the "money issues." Facts involving money or numbers can be boring but I do not believe they are in my book because I've made some new and significant findings. When you're saying to yourself " wow" or " I can't believe this" then there isn't an opportunity to get bored. It's hard to believe these were missed over all of these years but when considering most Authors haven't really spent the time needed to find these things then it actually does make sense. There's also places that no one has gone before, and if they did, I understand why they'd be overlooked. As one example, I found pages of trial transcripts that someone on the inside owned. If a researcher is pressed for time they are simply going to assume they are the transcripts they have at home and quickly move on. But because I've been doing this for as long as I have, and the fact that I know that being in a hurry is a really bad thing when it involves research, I've learned that these men sometimes wrote things on their copies. And so if someone close found it important enough to note - then isn't it important for us to consider? That was my mindset and I pursued it. I believe V1 was an "easy" read. V2 is a little different. My same weird "style" but I believe there are so many new facts its going to have to be read twice.

Can you satisfy our curiosity now: WHO "on the inside" owned those transcript pages and made notes on them?

Can you satisfy our curiosity now: WHO "on the inside" owned those transcript pages and made notes on them? This was merely one example out of the many footnotes (over 1800) meant to highlight the point. I probably shouldn't have done that because I really want everything to come out at once instead of just focusing in on one item. Its the whole reason why I don't create an index because all of this stuff ties together and isn't meant to be "surfed" owing to the fact that if that is done so much can be missed or lost. So since one thing leads to another and this book is almost out - I'd prefer to wait to discuss the specifics once it actually is. I can appreciate the request for sure, but I hope you understand where I am coming from because its definitely not meant to shut down your curiosity. So many people, places, and things have been "shut down" over the years due to ignorance. A lot of the information, and I did this thanks to all of the input from everyone here, was explained more thoroughly with background and histories prior to this crime. So, for example, if a certain person was negatively labeled by a previous author as a way to discredit them, I show that with ALL of the information needed to draw that conclusion it might not be the case. Over the years the NJSP, FBI, NYPD, Governor Hoffman, etc. all rec'd letters from the public. If a letter writer is unknown then how do we trust what they write? However, with just a tiny bit of research we can find out who they are. Since certain letter writers made some bold claims, if they are "legit," isn't that important? It all goes back to the timing issue I mentioned above. If one is researching and just doesn't have the time then its human nature to explain things away so one can move on to more "important" items before the clock runs out.
